Normally, Guitar hero: World Tour for PC will not allow you to play the vocals mode unless you have a compatible USB microphone. but thanks to the trick I discovered, you will enjoy playing guitar hero with any headset microphone you have. Just follow the steps carefully.

This method is provided as is with no guarantees that it will work and/or effect your computer in any way.

UPDATE

A visitor “honhon” commented below a much easier approach to enable vocals and here it is

  • right click the speaker icon near the clock and click recording devices
  • double click your default Mic
  • rename it to Logitech USB Mic
  • save everything and start the game

to enable playing other modes again you must rename the mic to something else
If this does not work you (or if you have a version of windows other than Vista) you can try the method below

-

UPDATE 2

Another approach to play vocals on guitar hero world tour was discovered by “nok (nokomment)”. this method uses registry editing and it is for advanced users only:

open the registry editor and select “Find”

write the name of your original default recording   device it “realtek high definition audio”  in my case. but you can find the right name for your system in the “record” tab under “sound” in your control panel

rename all registry KEYS AND VALUES to exactly (case sensitive) Logitech USB Mic

check the recording tab again you should find that the default recording device is now renamed to Logitech USB Mic

Start the game and enjoy!

If this does not work for you can try the method below

1. Download a small software called VOXmorph junior, it is free! , just install it somewhere. then start it and close it.

2. Open the installation folder (usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Screaming Bee\MorphVOX Junior) of  VOXmorph junior and find the .inf file with x64 in the name if you have a 64bit system or with x86 if you have a 32bit system, open the file.

3. in the first set of lines,  look for ”DriverVer =” increase the date and the version number.

4. scroll down to the end of the file and find the lines

SBEE=
MfgName=
SBEE_Audio.DeviceDesc=

Change these lines to

SBEE=”Logitech USB Mic”
MfgName=”Screaming Bee LLC”
SBEE_Audio.DeviceDesc=”Logitech USB Mic”

Also find the line

sbee_audio.SvcDesc=

And modify it to

sbee_audio.SvcDesc=”Logitech USB Mic”

Save the file.

5. Open the Device manager, and find the Screaming bee driver under “Sound , Video and game controllers” right click it and select “Update driver”

6. Click browse my computer for driver softwares and then “Let me pick from a list..” then click have disk. Browse to the VOXmorph folder with the modified inf file and select it.

7. Ignore the “end of the world” warning about the driver not being signed and install it any way. the installation should work fine and your driver’s name should become Logitech USB Mic.

8. Open VOXmorph again and run the setup wizard and set your Logitech USB Mic as the default recording device. disable voice morphing and listening from the program interface and just keep it open.

9. open Guitar hero: World tour now. the vocals mode should be active now.

The down side of this trick is that after doing it you will not be able to play using your regular keyboard, only the vocals mode will be available. To restore things just disable the Logitec driver from the Device manager.

For your information the microphones that are normally supported by guitar hero: world tour for PC are:

  • Mad Catz USB microphone
  • AK5370
  • PDP USB Microphone
  • Headset (XBOX 360 For Windows)
  • Logitech USB Mic

please report any problems you face, and if you can or can’t make it work. And please check back soon for updates.

Rock on!!

  8. Hi.

Can you see Logitech USB Mic in the device manager? BTW there no such a thing as “line-in function” in the device manager, you will find your modified Mic under “Sound Video and game controllers”.

I have tested this method on Windows Vista, we can work together to make it officially work on XP

    Good luck

  10. Hi.

Can you please give us some details.

    Congratz!!

  12. Sorry for flooding and writing the 4th comment here in an hour : )
There was Logitech USB Mic in the device manager, but in the Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices its name was morphVOXsomething. So I changed evrything that I can in that .inf file to ‘Logitech USB Mic’ and it changed too.
I think the last line is the key:
    ScreamingB.Name=”Logitech USB Mic”

Sadly, I have a brand new problem. There’s a pretty big delay between my voice and when the GH:WT recognise it. Imo this is caused by the fact that the voice have to ‘go through’ the morphvox appl and the CPU is overloaded with the game, so that process needs some time.

  13. PsMan on Mon, 10th Aug 2009 10:44 am
  14. Thank you for your comment.

I probably have some fix for your problem. Open morphvox’s settings there will be an option to set the delay between the input and output, also there are some other setting that you can try. and make sure you disable “listen” and “morph” from morphvox.

I also have a small delay that is < 1 sec, May be I'll look for another program to replace morph vox ..

You are welcome to comment any time you want, if this is flooding, then I love it.

Do you have any Idea about this problem ???

  29. PsMan on Thu, 13th Aug 2009 11:13 am
  30. Let’s cover the basics before we start working on your problem.

Do you actually update the driver after changing the .inf file? do you see the name that youv’e written in the device manager?

If no, please follow the steps carefully, but if you did everything right, please tell me the following: what is your OS? is morphvox functional? remember that you need to set it as a default recording device and that it needs to be open and working before you start the game (you can test it by enabling listen from morphvox and listening to your own voice)

  52. Great Method there honhon, I had no idea that you can change the mic’s name ( I thought about renaming the entire sound card driver but that would be a pain if you still want to play using the keyboard)

    Thanks a bunch

  53. PsMan on Fri, 14th Aug 2009 10:47 am
  54. I’m sure they gave “The point” a name in some of the vocals tutorials, If your point is jumpy try lowering your mic’s volume, enabling noise suppression, or reducing the mic boost gain. when you are silent your “point” should stay still.

  55. nok on Fri, 14th Aug 2009 11:50 am

And there’s no option to rename the mic in XP.

  63. PsMan on Sat, 15th Aug 2009 12:16 am
  64. Why can’t you modify the driver? there is an inf file in the installation folder, where did you stop?

A last resort will be to rename the sound driver of your board, to do that download your latest sound driver and rename as much as you can in it to Logitech USB Mic.
but remember that I didn’t try this and that you will have to restore the original driver to enable playing with the keyboard again.

waiting for your updates, Good luck

  68. Hi. GHHWT.

I can’t really understand your problem, I understand the first method have worked for you. but I don’t understand who is complaining? is it about the delay? using the first method (aka honhon) the delay is very low. And about why can’t you play other instruments when you enable the mic, I think that the same problem will happen if you use a real guitar hero mic, the programmers of the game brobably thought that if you can buy a mic, you sure can buy a guitar hero guitar.

    I think I have a brand new problem…
I tried the VOXmorph junior on XP and honhon’s renaming in Windows 7 and it works until the game load the song but before I can play the game stops working and quit.. The game does it both of OS.
    I use Xbox360 Headset..
    Pls help!

  77. PsMan on Sun, 16th Aug 2009 1:19 pm
  78. @steewattyoo

    Hi
Why dont you use. Logitech USB mic? do you think that Xbox360 Headset is cool?

I suspect that the game have special treatment for xbox 360 headsets and that the Logitech is the closest we have to a regular mic.

maybe you can change the bitrate and channels number of your morphvox mic?? or your real mic?? try messing with that, that can be the reason why the game is crashing.

Please update us if it works for you

  79. steewattyoo on Sun, 16th Aug 2009 2:33 pm
  80. I don’t think “Xbox360 Headset is cool”, I just saw it on the supported microphnes list and tried it. When I use my regular mic the game stops working too..

Now I use Windows 7 and simply renamed the default microphe to “Logitech USB Mic” (like honhon said) so I don’t installed morphvox.

I didn’t change the bitrate I leave it “1 channel 16 bit 44100 Hz” do you think this is the cause the game crashes?

  81. CrisaliS on Sun, 16th Aug 2009 4:01 pm
  82. Hi. I did all of the steps above (winXP SP3), but now GH freezes on loading screen and sometimes the only way to kill it is reset :/. Even after I uninstalled VOXmorph, deleted it’s drivers ant set the default recording device back to what it was before the changes.
I don’t get it.. why can’t the game see it’s own devices? <_<
I bought complete band set with a crappy mic that I can't use.. great :/.

  83. PsMan on Sun, 16th Aug 2009 4:22 pm
  84. since you have the same problem in your two systems, then it is mostly a hardware or driver issue, assuming that the game runs normally when you play guitar mode, the only difference is the mic, and that is the source of the problem, my mic runs the game ok at:
    2 channels, 16bit 44100hz
may be you shout try that.
also try using Logitech instead of xbox.

    Good luck

  85. PsMan on Sun, 16th Aug 2009 5:03 pm
  86. Hi CrisaliS

I dont get it, I understand that you have the guitar hero kit including the mic, so why are you using this method? if you have just bought the kit after you tried this method but the game keeps crashing on you then it is weird.

Anyway open the device manager and insure that under “sound video and game controllers” there is no virtual hardware, as a last resort, maybe you should try reinstalling the game, normally after you uninstall morphvox the game should return to normal.

  91. Torch on Wed, 19th Aug 2009 8:06 pm
  92. This a round about and resource consuming method. The easiest way is to just use a no-DVD cracked GHWT.EXE

Then hex-edit it and search for Logitech USB Mic. Chance it to the name of your mic (as shown in Control Panel > Sounds & Audio Devices)

  93. nok on Thu, 20th Aug 2009 12:12 am
  94. Torch: I tried that and the application didn’t start after it. I got a ‘classic’ windows error (on XP).

  95. PsMan on Thu, 20th Aug 2009 12:21 am
  96. @Torch: I don’t think I’ts anywhere near legal to use cracks or cracking the game your self. please everyone DO NOT USE THIS METHOD, I did think about it anyway but it is not the best way to do it

  97. PsMan on Thu, 20th Aug 2009 12:23 am
  98. @nok: It is not legal nor easy to modify an exe, an exe has an internal structure that requires a specific length for each part of the program carelessly modifying the file will surly result in an error

  99. nok on Thu, 20th Aug 2009 2:33 pm
  100. I think it isn’t legal to play the vocal part without the required mics, so it doesn’t really matter what to do for it. I agree the others that you mentioned.
    I’ll install Vista or win7 RC : )

  101. nok on Thu, 20th Aug 2009 6:15 pm
  102. I got a method that works for me on XP. I ran regedit.exe and searched for the name of my audio device and modified lots of the entries to Logitech USB Mic. Its name changed in control panel too. There’s no delay with this method. The only problem is that it needs some time to change them back to play drums/guitar with the keyboard.

  103. PsMan on Thu, 20th Aug 2009 10:36 pm
  104. @nok I completely disagree, the game just asks for a USB mic in theory it’s not like there is a guitar hero dedicated mic or some kind of encryption. therefore i think that what we are doing is completely legal.

Your registry method is great!! I’ll test it tomorrow and if it works we will call it the “nok method” :)

@Fatal1TY: I managed to get the same error as you on my laptop. Did you use the “honhon” method (mic renaming) or my method (screaming bee). I got the same error as you when I was testing the “nok” method.

  132. Oh, at last, i got it. Here is what you need to do. In x86 file, there is no such line as “sbee_audio.SvcDesc=” Instead you need to change the line “ScreamingB.Name=” . At the end of that line type “Logitech USB Mic” and you have your mic in the selection. I also got to play a little, but the lagg is huge ( not the fps lagg) how to reprair that?

You can read the previoous comments concerning the delay. Also you can try the registry method, although I did not get it to work yet. the main Idea is to open regedit find all keys and values named by your default recording device’s name and rename them to “Logitech USB Mic”, if you dont know your way around registry don’t risk it.

Why are looking for Logitech USB in you registry? look for your real recording device and rename it in both registry keys and values.

You are looking for the wrong thing, do not look for the mic name, look for the recording device name, usually it is your sound card’s name (“High Definition Audio Device”) , or just the word “Microphone” it depends on your sound card driver

  146. Ok, i changed a lot of things and non of them worked, the vocals didn’t work at all in the game. Hex edit is the best way, just change to the name of your default recording device, and you got it. You can play on on vocals though, but there is no delay and it’s easy.

  156. I have Guitar hero world tour mic for x360 and it works great standalone, but as soon as I power up wireless guitar, MIC doesnt show up in the game, can anyone help with this issue?

    PC of course

    thanks

  158. @Fanator

your case doesn’t make sense at all. What I know that once a GH Mic is connected you can no longer use the keyboard to play, but you do have the wireless guitar so you should be able play both vocals and guitar.

What do mean by “MIC doesn’t show up in the game” is the vocals mode disabled?? what is the error message? I will try to help even though I don’t have real mic nor the guitar.

    Good luck

  160. Hello to everybody. Before asking, I wanna thank for everything posted here… Well, my problem is, that I did all the steps (1-9) and I managed to run GH:WT with the mic. But when I chose a song, the game jumps to my desktop. I would be very pleased if somebody explain to me how can I do the REGEDIT method… I don’t know wich keys I have to rename. THANX AGAIN!!! (and sorry for my English)

  161. PsMan on Tue, 8th Sep 2009 10:02 am
  162. @Laurencevanq

Hi! unfortunately, I don’t think that the regedit method can be made universal, the keys you must rename depends on your sound card driver. just get your recording device name and look it up in the registry.
Did you try the MIC rename method? it is easier.

Anyway the crashing problem has been discussed before but no solution has been found yet, check back again soon may be I can find a solution.

    Good luck!!

Thanx. Even though, I don’t know how I can rename my mic on Win XP. But I’ll keep on trying with the other methods, if I solve something I’ll let ya all know… BYE!!

  166. Hi,

Concerning the Crash when you start any song using vocal mode:
I had Vista x64 SP1, and I tried playing vocal mode on Guitar hero by renaming various microphones I had (Ranging from USB mics to Bluetooth mics to the standard analog mics)
The game would recognize the mic everytime, but as soon as you start a song, the game crashes. I searched EVERYwhere on the web for a solution, and you guys seem to have the most info about this (Although you dont have a solution yet).

Well, im glad to say that I just installed Windows 7 x64 and for some reason everything works fine now. So I dont know if it was just an OS issue or maybe a driver issue, but as long as it works now i’m happy.

Maybe you guys can figure it out.
I used the driver CD I got with my motherboard when I had Vista, but with Win7 I use the microsoft drivers(it was installed with windows).

  168. Oh, and another thing…

Since GH looks for the device names to figure out which controllers you have, I was wondering if you guys can figure out if there might be a way to use Vocal and Guitar mode.

If someone with a real “Guitar Hero” guitar could be so kind as to post the device id/name, then we could try renaming a random HID device to that name. The game might recognize the “keyboard” controller, the Mic, and the renamed HID controller. Thus enabling two valid controllers in the game.

If this is possible, then we could also try renaming more HID devices to include Bass and drum in the game. A full band mode might be possible on the PC without any of the real controllers.

  170. Hi Dotslash

Thank you for your valuable input.
I have been working for a while on a method to fake a guitar hero guitar. As a matter of fact it is not complicated. You will not a device ID for the game to believe that an input device is a GH guitar. Any game controller will enable Band mode, the problem is that the controller is not sending the correct button codes as a GH guitar to interact with the game.

Controllers has two types of input I think RAW and codes, regular game controllers use RAW codes that are interpreted by the driver.
If we would pass a regular game pad for GH guitar, we will need to figure out the GH guitar codes and modify the controller driver accordingly.

I have worked on this for I while, I’m kinda busy these days so I’ll get back to it when i have some free time. Any ideas are appreciated anyway.

    Good luck

  172. Hi. I’ve bought a license GH3:LoR(with the guitar-controller) about a 1.5 year ago. Since that time I’ve been using it to play the GH:Aerosmith and GH:WT. I don’t have that USB micropone, but with help of these methods I’m using my microphone.
So.. I can play in Bass, Guitar modes with my controller, vocal mode – simple mic, but I can’t use both these devices to play Head to Head mode. Why?

  173. PsMan on Sun, 18th Oct 2009 10:35 am
  174. Hi. NeverMora.

Can you play band mode? Is it even possible to play head to head betwen a mic and a controller? it doesn’t seem fair, vocals mode is much easier.

Our problem is that you can’t even play sigle player mode using the keybaord once you activate the mic.

just try the band mode and tell me if it would work.

  175. NeverMora on Sun, 18th Oct 2009 11:45 am
  176. Yeah.. playing the band mode is possible.

  180. Hi

I dont think thats gonna work, that is to calibrate the hardware lag for older computer, it is not for Mics.

  186. Sorry my english for advance.

Hey man, thanks so much! it worked like a bloody charm here!
    Thanks a lot!

    But i have a question.
Is there anyway to make the game recognize the other instruments as well?
Like a put some generic ps2 guitar and make it work on Windows world tour game.

    Thank in advance.

And thanks for the awesome Mic tip!

  195. PsMan on Sat, 20th Feb 2010 9:58 am
  196. Sorry dude, once you activate the Mic, you will be unable to use your keyboard as a controller, you will need the guitar or drum set controllers. sorry but the game just seems to be coded this way, if you have the mic you should have everything else

  200. faizhalf, You got me surprised there for a moment, but you are wrong dude, no one never said that you can’t play the band mode, If you had every GH gadget ever made like the guys in the video. We are saying here that you cant’ play the band mode with a regular mic and a keyboard.

-rename it to Logitech USB Mic
-save everything and start the game

  210. Hi radeon

What method are you using to enable the mic? My gut is telling me that your system’s default mic is not the pseudo Logitech USB mic. open the recoding devices window, get your mic and scream your lungs out, insure that the mic detecting the sound is the logitech.

    Good luck
