Goodbye Opera

I’ve been an Opera browser user for far more than I can remember (I’ve used it on a dial-up line if you want to get an idea), Opera was one of the first applications that I download when I get a new computer, it was one software that is never closed on my home PC, it was the safe for my digital life, but today and thanks to the new version 15 I’m ready to say #goodbye-Opera

So why did I stick with Opera for so long?

It’s not like opera was the best browser, it has its flaws, mostly compatibility issues, slow scrolling, slow startup, memory eating. But still I loved it, first of all because of the password manager (the wand),  which can get you enslaved to it if you use if for long enough, many times I read a website that I have no idea of ever being on before, and clicking ctrl-enter would simply get me in! sometimes I wondered if the passwords were carried from a previous life of mine. The Opera Link system which was added recently made the password manager just unbeatable.

The second thing is that Opera is not a very popular browser, it is not IE, FireFox or Chrome. most of the black hat techniques of passing scripts and pop-ups would just fail to get to you, just becasue these people didn’t bother with working on the Opera compatibility of their techniques. Also the page element blocking feature was a great addition, you can simply hide the annoying ads on the pages you visit frequently.

And last but not least I loved Dragonfly, the Opera developer troubleshooting utility, for me it “was” much better than Firefox’s or Chrome’s one, I think many devs would agree.

What was so wrong about Opera 15?

Where to start! The password manager is gone!! they have changed to a new Firefox like “save password” feature which will only save one password per page, and it can’t be synched with Opera Link, I know that this is most likely to be fixed in future version but to hell with it, no version of Opera should have been released without it.

Also where is CTRL-ENTER ???????? I was shocked to see that it is not working on the default configuration, every browser that I have ever used had it, why would you take it away? do I have to feel awkward every time I want to open a website??

Somebody also must have stepped on the DragonFly! Also the Developer tool have changed for worse, it is not just an unpleasant version of Firefox’s Firefly. what ruined it for me was the removal of the” click to select” in the element debugger. which is what I loved most about it

Last but not least, bugs, bugs, bugs, I guess nobody tested Opera under a bad internet connection, for example when you try to type a link, most of the time it would just open a blank page deleting everything you wrote.  I don’t want to talk about Youtube cause that will be just sad.

I know that most of these issue may be solved in future version, but I’m taking this opportunity to recover from My Opera addiction and move to a solid browser that I can rely  on. I chose Google Chrome, What’s your daily used browser?

Goodbye-Opera

iphone Black screen DFU after upgrade with tinyumbrella

Got a black screen (DFU) after upgrading your iphone 3G S or 4 while having Tinyumbrella TTS server active? then welcome to the club. this is a commune mistake when using Tinyumbrella to evade itunes error 3194 .

Error 3194 means that itunes was not able to get the correct blobs to upgrade your iphone to the version you want. Maybe becasue it is not the latest, or because that your hosts file is pointing to the cydia server which doesn’t have these blobs either. Anyway Tinyumbrella doesn’t give up when it has no actual blobs for the phone, instead it supplies itunes with a confirmation to upgrade while will ultimately give you a nice old iBrick.

Once in this DFU black screen mode, Tinyumbrella will not longer be able to save or get your blobs, which makes resolving this situation more complex. but don’t panic. you have three solutions.

How to fix iphone black screen after upgrade?

1. upgrade to the latest IOS with itunes, your idevice will work again, but it will most probably be updated to the latest firmware and baseband making jailbreaking and unlocking almost impossible (depending in your device). this is the easy way.

2. See if you can make/download a custom version of the latest version (the version which itune suggests when you click restore) that will save your baseband and jailbreak your device. then use it to upgrade without tiny umbrella

3. Use redsn0w’s Boot tethered now to kick your device our of DFU, then get your blobs with tinyumbrella or ifaith, and see which versions you can restore to. then  restore again with these blobs in tiny umbrella.

Error 404 after updating wordpress permalink with /blog

wordpress 404 It was a nightmare when I accidentally pressed update permalinks on my wordpress blog. A new /blog/ was added to all links leading all visitors coming from search engines to a 404 Page cannot be found error. Fixing this issue took me like 30 minutes jumping from one wordpress post to another. so I decided to write this, so that you may save your site from all the disgrace of a 404.

It all started when I copying my favourite permalink structure from one of my blogs (which was convereted to a wordpress multisite recently) to another, then I accidentally pressed update permalinks on the first blog, changing all links to include an addition /blog slug. for example:

http://angrybyte.com/iphone-2/fix-iphone-caller-id-name-for-sms/  will become

Fix iPhone caller ID name for SMS

I discovered this when I was going through my visitor statistics where I found that everyone is getting a 404.

The reason why this /blog this is hardcoded is to prevent conflicts of you had a category named as one of your other sites in a multisite wordpress installation.

I read that going to your Network admin / sites / setting and then removing the /blog from the Permalink structure would fix it. Well it didn’t. The /blog was removed from the links in the page, but clicking any link will still give you a 404 page cannot be found error .

after digging in deeper, any trying many things like the .htaccess file. I tried a plugin that is said to fix this wordpress permalink disaster. it didnt work at first. until I restored the /blog that I removed from the site settings.

This is nothing short of a wordpress glitch, the permalink structure did not change when I originally upgraded to multisite, and it worked great. but once I messed with the permalinks page, there was no going back but with a plugin

error 3194 when restoring iPad iphone Fix

Error 3194 is an iTunes error that you may get when trying to install a firmware to your iPad, iPhone or iPod. This error indicates  one of the following issues:

  • You are unable to connect to iTunes server.
  • You can connect to the server, but the ipsw version you are trying to install is not the latest version provided by apple.
  • You (or a third part software)  have  modified the hosts file in your PC to redirect apple server requests to the Cydia server. Which does not have SHSH blobs for the version you are trying to downgrade to.

If you are trying to upgrade, then you must have gs.apple.com point to apple, otherwise you will get error 3194.

If you are trying to downgrade, you must have it point to cydia server, AND have SHSH blobs saved there (you must had  version you are trying to downgrade to jailbroken, and opened Cydia on it). another option is to have these SHSH blobs saved on computer using tiny Umbrella. ipad error 3194

To find out if you have one of the first two problems. open your browser and try going to gs.apple.com. You should get a 404 page inside apple.com, if you find yourself in Cydia then you will have to navigate to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\ and open the file called hosts. look for entries containing gs.apple.com.

Disable them with a hash if you need to connect to apple.

Another solution you may do is to use tiny umbrella, it WILL make error 3194 go away, but it may lead to a bad restore (black screen) after the restore is completed in case it didn’t have the correct SHSH blobs.

Hamachi disconnects immediately after connection – FIX

If your Hamachi Logmein client is unable to connect and it keeps on connecting, probing, logging and then disconnecting. then you may have a problem similar to mine.

The Problem is that I had an old version of hamachi, which I uninstalled, but some settings stayed and caused hamachi to malfunction.

You will first need to uninstall Hamachi, when asked to, delete all settings. then install it again, Careful if it says that there is a stored configuration that it wants to use. you must say NO.

That’s that, it should work fine now.

Bootlace crash immidiately after launch iPhone 3G – Fix

Bootlace is an app to run android on the iphone using the idroid project.

If Bootlace crashes after being started (sometimes you can even glance the checking compatibility message) on your iphone, then you are at the right place.

I struggled to discover that Bootlace is not a fan of Multitasking on the iPhone 3G. To get it started just disable whatever you used to enable multitasking on your phone, in my case it was “Backgrounder” I just opened it and set the backgrounding method to Off .

While you are here, Do you think that you could ever permanently convert your iphone into an Android?  Would that be worth it? I personally would stick with the IOS for another couple of years.
