AsRock Motherboards and 2.5 external hard drives

I noticed a problem Western Digital My passport 1 TB, I could hear clicks from the drive when it’s connected to my famous Asrock x58 Deluxe, the same clicks you would hear from a bad hard drive, failing to spin-up.  I assumed that the drive is bad. but that was not right, it is working like a charm on other computers, even laptops.

The drive copy some files without errors, many people would have just listened to lady GaGa and just danced assuming the everything is gonna be Ok, but it’s not.

I checked the files that I backed up but most of them were corrupted!!!! yes corrupted, windows thought everything was ok but it wasn’t.

After investing a couple of hours of my sorry life trying to find a solution to this, I understood that the problem was that the drive is not getting enough power to be more specific the 5V delivered were not complete I tried all the following without success, :

– Changing the used port

– Unplugging eveything on the same hub

– Over clocking the board

-running the asrock power saving mode

– Upgrading the BIOS

– different file systems for the drive.

– The asrock App charger, (that is suppsed to make ipods and iphones charge faster off AsRock boards by that delivering higher voltage to them).

– Updating the Intel INF drivers.

So I dug a little deeper and here is what I discovered.

There are two Enhanced USB controllers and about 6 regular USB controllers in the chipset.

The Motherboard seems to be stacking all USB devices on the same controller, which append to be the first enhanced controller 3ACC. I think it would be safe to assume that the controller is able to deliver only a limited current, so if you have multiple high power consumption devices, you will fail to deliver enough power to everything.

In my case, I have a USB webcam sucking 500 mA, A USB WiMax modem, sucking another 500 mA, a USB printer draining around 100 mA, so when I add the external hard drive claiming an extra 500 mA, from the same poor little controller, it would be natural to have a failure.

I tried something that got me some interesting results:

I went around and disabled the rock star USB Enhanced host controller that  is gathering all usb hardware around it, and guess what? now the usb devices are distributed among hubs, and I have no power failures, and no clicks!!!

But I still have a problem, the copy speed of the hard drive went down from 30 MB /s to just a couple hundred KBs, and anytime I would re – enable the first enhanced controller, all devices would disconnect and reconnect to it as they were before.

Prince of Persia The Forgotten Sands, Stuck behind a closed door?

Prince of Persia The Forgotten Sands along with many other UBISOFT games are now using a new DRM protection, the idea behind it very smart, instead of just protecting the game by DVD checks, hardware codes, and encryptions, each of which became just a pass-time for hardcore crackers like SKIDROW, RELOADED, or ViTALiTY. Now the protection method is to hide some small parts of the game inside a server, which checks the validity of your game before allowing these portions of the game to execute. this is the secret behind the new notice on the games “This game requires a permanent internet connection to play”

In the case of prince of Persia , the aspects of the game that are controlled by this server are :

– Levers logic
– Door timing
– Upgrades
– Abilities
– XP & Levels
– Area codes

so in case your connection to the server fails any of these may become problematic or behave unexpectedly.

So if you are stuck behind a closed door, you may want to check your internet connection, that is of course if you are not using the early cracked version by SKIDROW that has reported this bug and that was fixed in their later released crack fix.

Needless to say, as the gamers are furious against this new type of protection many of them started attacking the game servers with thousand of denial of service attacks, in the goal to make games unplayable even for rightful owners, and by that forcing the companies to refrain from using this protection method ever again.

Are you with or against this new DRM?

Windows 7 RC to begin restarting every 2 hours on 03-02-2010

If you are still using Window 7 RC with a beta key, you will notice that windows 7 will be auto restarted every two hours starting today March the 2nd 2010.

This is an effort from Microsoft to force the people that are still suing the pre-release version to get the full version on windows 7, or downgrade to a previous OS.

So if you have noticed that your windows server began restarting (apparently  randomly)  after Marsh the first, don’t worry, it is not a hardware issue, it is just a wake up call for you to move on before the beta key you’re using completely expires on June 2010

If you are unsure if you have an RC version on windows 7, just press the start button and type “winver” then hit enter, if you see “Evaluation copy: expires on: 03/02/2010 1:59AM” then you have an RC version

This is a sad day for many many kids around the world.

Automatically Detect and Download all your PC drivers

During the last decade, I got the chance to try many driver repairing tools, some of them were free, some were not. I never liked any of them though, some couldn’t correctly detect the hardware that is unrecognized by windows, some provided dead driver download links, and some were loaded with spywares are scarewares.

When I was working on a friends Acer laptop, trying to find almost all of it’s drivers that Windows curiously was unable to recognize any of them. Even the manufacturer was not quite sure what the hell  they put in this model.

That is when I tried a software called Device doctor, I kinda liked it for the following reasons.

1. Free

2. Was able to detect all the needed drivers.

3. Was able to provide driver updates for the installed drivers.

4. All drivers were hosted at the device doctor website.

5. No registration required !

6. There is even a portable version of the software, to be used without installing from a flash drive, if you were geeky enough for that.

I still haven’t got the chance to really check it’s capabilities, but so far, it’s looking good.

You can download Device Doctor here

Also you can get the Portable Device Doctor here

activate the Missing Hard disk partition in windows 7

after I installed windows 7 on my pc, I noticed that 1 of my 5 hard disk  partitions was missing. the real cause of this is not yet clear to me, it is probably related to the ability of the windows 7 installation process to assign driver letters to a big number of partitions, but who knows.

Anyway to get back your partitions do not try extreme solutions such as BIOS settings and chipset INF files, just follow the following steps.

1. right click “Computer” and select “manage” . click “disk management” from the list on the left.

2. locate the missing partition, it is usually the partition without a driver letter.

3. right click it and assign a driver letter to it.

That’s it ! everything should work just fine now.

By the way what was you first impression after installing windows 7? I don’t know about you but I was a little disappointed

Activating the sound front panel on Asrock motherboards

sometimes, after installing a new asrock motherboard, you will notice that the front panel is not working (either the MIC or the headset jacks). this problem is caused by the board failing to detect that your computer case does have a front panel and that it is connected.

To get around this problem and use your front panel, go to the BIOS settings and find the front panel detection setting and change it from auto to enabled. this will make the front panel jacks appear in your realtek audio manager.

This problem has been detected by Asrock and they released new BIOS versions that change the default setting to enabled instead of auto.

I used to love asrock, but not anymore, what about you? do you like the newer asrock MBs?
