play Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X on DirectX 10.1

Tom Clany's H.A.W.X DX 10.1Tom Clany’s H.A.W.X DX 10.1This game is the first game I know that has a DirectX 10.1 mode, anyway it is a little tricky to activate it.

First, I don’t  know of any nVidia card that has DirectX 10.1  support, too bad for the new expansive nvidia 200 series owners. ATI 4800 series a fully compatible.

Second you must have Windows Vista Service pack 1 installed, not even the regular vista will do. Sorry.

Now you must have the game correctly installed and working, you maybe have noticed that there is a disabled DirectX 10 tab in the video options of the game, this trick will enable it as well.

Instead on running the game normally (double clicking the icon) right click it then select “Play Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X DX10”, (You can also browse to the game’s installation folder and open HAWX_dx10.exe instead of HAWX.exe )

You are good to go, now you can enable DirectX 10.1 from the new directX 10 menu in the game’s video settings.

This has been tested and found working on my ATI 4890.

The Vista Snipping Tool.

Many useless small applications are added with windows vista. One of them is called the Snipping tool

This tool is used to capture portions of the screen, add marks or highlights to it, and then copy it to the clipboard or save it to a file.

To start it, select it from the accessories menu in the Vista ultimate start menu.

Click and drag a box around the areas you want to capture and voila, you can then copy the picture to the clipboard, save it to a file or send it by Email.

For me I would stick with the usual “PrintScreen” and mspaint combination for screen capturing for the following reasons:

  • The snipping tool does not allow you to capture open menus or the start menu
  • It can’t be easily used inside full screen applications such as games.
  • Not easily nor quickly accessible as the Printscreen keyboard key.

It’s just good to know that it is there that’s all.

Conficker worm

Conficker worm , also known as Downup, Downadup and Kido, is a computer worm targeting the Microsoft Windows operating system that was first detected in November 2008. Windows Vista Explorer keyboard hotkeys

A few new keyboard tricks has been implemented in windows Vista, and some more were modified compared to their XP equivalents. for example:

open a folder containing pictures, videos, or just any files. hold Ctrl and roll the mouse wheel. This will change the thumbnails size.

hold Alt while going forward or backward from any folder. This will hide the file-names from appearing. this is perfect for folders containing Photos.

If you have vista Aero. try winkey-tab. this will start switch between active windows in 3D style.

You can always try other keyboard shortcuts from windows XP because most of them still work.
One more thing if you use the “Windows Task Manager” a lot, you can directly activate it by pressing Ctrl-Shift-Esc without having to jump through the logon window.
